The Lancashire Cycleway

We cycled the Lancashire Cycleway 27-29 August 2022

On the first day we met at UCLan Arena and started our tour just after 8.00am.

Cycling to Kirkham, Wrea Green and through Weeton we had fairly flat views of the Blackpool tower to the west and the hills we were going to tackle to the north

A stop at Elswick for elevenses & then through little Eccleston crossing the dual carriageway and the toll bridge which took us through Pilling.

Started our climbing and some lovely descents and magnificent views across to the Irish Sea.

Glasson Dock a small group stopped here and rejoined the route

Into the edges of Lancashire stopping off at the Old Post Office for a late lunch.

The route then crossed for a while with Way of The Roses heading further north towards Silverdale and Arnside & a quick skirt through to Borwick. After picking up some fresh milk from a local farmer.

Borwick hall

An imposing and apparently haunted old hall which is now outdoor education centre. There were winding staircases and spacious rooms; we had the run of the whole hall but chose to share a room just in case. Borwick Hall was self-catering to our evening meal was a 20-minute walk to a pub in Longlands

Sunday

After cooking up a porridge breakfast for all we set out back onto the route through quiet country lanes climbing steadily with the occasional downhill. When we got to Hornby we stop for our second breakfast of the day before continuing to climb the long stretch over Cross o’ Greet and descending into Slaidburn for lunch at the Hark to Bounty.

A really steep climb out of Slaidburn and long stretches inclining upwards and descents through to Waddington, Whalley & Clitheroe and then the final push to our accommodation. Cycling in two small groups our route took us through a farm, fields and riverside paths, turned out to be impassable. Back to Ribchester and a climb/ Walk to Hothersall. It was a very late arrival for one group and adventures shared over porridge on Monday morning.

On our last day we headed out towards Longridge and the last few climbs and descents on the roads through Inglewhite, Bilsborrow & Woodplumpton where we regrouped at the sports aren before cycling along quiet paths through Preston and to the docks for lunch.

After lunch we hopped into the Guild Wheel through Avenham & Brockholes leaving at Fulwood to head over Moor Park through the university square and to the train station.
